Alexandria church’s pumpkin patch supporting charitable causes opens this weekend

The tradition of picking out pumpkins and other gourds for the fall season is returning to Alexandria’s Seminary Hill neighborhood in October.

For a 33rd year Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill (3606 Seminary Road) will host its annual Pumpkin Patch from Saturday, Oct. 3 to Saturday, Oct. 31. The Pumpkin Patch will offer pumpkins in a variety of sizes grown by Navajo Nation farmers, as well as other gourds, homemade soups, baked goods and seasonally-themed crafts. Prices start at $1 and vary by size.

“The pumpkin patch is a wonderful ministry for many reasons,” the Rev. Randy Alexander, rector of the church, said on its website. “The entire parish is involved. It’s our welcoming door to the community, and it gives us the resources to do God’s charitable work.”

All proceeds from the Pumpkin Patch support local, national, and international charities that feed, house and care for people in need. Locally, some of the charities supported are Carpenter’s Shelter, ALIVE!, Christ Church/West End Lazarus Ministry, Grace Episcopal Church Food Pantry and Neighborhood Health (Arlandria clinic).

Hours for the Pumpkin Patch are 12-6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends and Oct. 12. Volunteers can also sign up for shifts to help with sales and unloading.

Alexandrians can also pick up pumpkins at Greenstreet Gardens (1721 W. Braddock Road) or venture south of the city to Nalls Produce’s Pumpkin Hill (7310 Beulah Street in Franconia).
