ACPS updates academic calendar to increase the number of instructional days to 180

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) made changes to its 2025-26 school calendars, adding more instructional days and improving flexibility for weather-related closures.

The Alexandria City School Board approved updates to both the traditional and Tucker/Modified calendars during its School Board meeting on Thursday (June 12).

The traditional calendar now includes school days on October 3 and November 10, 2025, as well as February 27, 2026. For Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, which follows the Tucker/Modified calendar, students will have additional class days on October 3, 2025, and November 10, 2025, and March 27, 2026.

Both calendars now have early dismissal days scheduled for February 25 and March 4, 2026, for spring parent-teacher conferences. May 26, 2026, is now a teacher work day that can be used as a regular school day if needed to make up for weather-related closures.

ACPS has updated its calendar policy to include new requirements for middle and high school instructional hours, explain how make-up days work, and mark several school holidays as potential staff work days.

The updated policy also expands the calendar committee to include school administrators, facilities and operations staff, and representatives from school and community relations. It reduces the number of conference days from three to two and adds cultural observance days for the Ethiopian and Persian New Year.

The Calendar Committee will meet again in the fall of 2025 to update the 2026-27 school calendars and propose a three-year calendar plan.

The amended 2025-26 academic calendars and work calendars are available online.
