Dr. Eric Coleman, director of school nutrition for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), has been named the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Region Director of the Year by the School Nutrition Association (SNA).
The SNA, a national non-profit, recognized Coleman for his work in managing school meal programs that feed students.
Coleman has expanded the Community Eligibility Program, making free school meals available to more students. He’s also introduced Taste-Test Tuesdays, giving students a chance to try potential new plant-based menu items.
Working with the ALIVE Food Pantry, Coleman has helped distribute meals during the holiday season, providing fresh produce and grab-and-go options for the ACPS community.
To support his team’s growth, Coleman created a training manager position, ensuring staff have professional development opportunities throughout the year. He’s also started an employee stipend program for uniforms and safety gear, as well as to recognize staff efforts.
Coleman is boosting marketing and community engagement by encouraging staff to use social media and the school website. They share meal photos, team pictures, and updates on special events.
The Director of the Year Award highlights school nutrition directors who show dedication to their meal programs. Coleman’s achievements will be showcased on SNA’s social media and at the Annual National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, this July.
