The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) has announced a SoberRide program for Cinco de Mayo next month, part of an ongoing mission to curb drunk driving by offering free rides through Lyft.

The program starts at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, and will run until 4 a.m. on Friday, May 6. Residents over 21-years old can enter a SoberRide code into the app’s payment tab and receive a voucher of up to $15 for a trip home. The code will be posted at 3 p.m. on May 5.

In 2019, 792 people in the area used the SoberRide program during Cinco de Mayo, and WRAP said in the release that the program was curtailed in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. The program has provided 82,127 rides since 1991.

SoberRide is available throughout the region, Alexandria included. The program is also available on St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween and the winter holidays.

“Over a third of U.S. traffic deaths during Cinco de Mayo involve drunk drivers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said WRAP President Kurt Erickson in a release.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
