Over 22 local artisans are participating in the first Alexandria Makers Market next week.
The holiday event is set for Sunday, November 24 from 12-6 p.m. at Port City Brewing Company (3950 Wheeler Avenue).
“My intention with Alexandria Makers Market is to celebrate all the hard-working creatives based in our city, and to enable opportunities for us to showcase our talent,” said market founder Alyssa Kovach in a statement.
“I approached Port City because they are incredible makers themselves. I thought they might appreciate the motivation of this concept in a way that other venues may not be able to relate to. I am so honored and grateful they have agreed to host our inaugural event.”
In addition to a wide variety of vendors to shop from, three ticketed workshop events are scheduled throughout the day. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the workshops, which will be held upstairs in the brewery. All workshop participants will receive a pint of Port City beer during their class.
The workshops include:
- 2:45-1:45 p.m. — Brew Bath Bombs with Truly-Life (using Port City grain)
- 2-3 p.m. — Hand-lettered Ornaments with PrisLetters
3:30-5 p.m. — Holiday Cookie Decorating with From Politics to Pastry

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
