Joseph Hensley Park has completely reopened in the Eisenhower West neighborhood after years of renovations, the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities said.
The renovated park (4200 Eisenhower Avenue) includes a new synthetic turf upper diamond field, a full-size natural turf softball field on the lower level, a replacement picnic pavilion and bathhouse and new playground. The athletic fields have new LED field lighting, scoreboards, safety netting, dugouts, spectator seating and batting cages. A flexible court and event space also provides a setting for community and recreational programming.
“Joseph Hensley Park represents our commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces that bring people together,” said Hashim Taylor, director of the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities.
Along with the new amenities, the project expanded parking, upgraded stormwater infrastructure and ADA-accessible paths, improved wayfinding and signage, and added a new maintenance building and enclosed maintenance yard.
The project was informed by Alexandria’s 2014 Citywide Parks Improvement Plan. Residents had identified improved drainage, upgraded athletic fields, additional parking, more trees, a playground and improved accessibility as priorities for the park.
Renovations began in November 2023, prompting the city to close the site until construction had concluded. Park amenities were back open to the public in April 2026.
The city is encouraging residents to explore the renovated park during Park and Recreation Month in July. The park’s picnic areas will be available for online reservations starting on Aug. 1 and in person at the Reservation & Registration Office in the Lee Center (1108 Jefferson Street) on Aug. 3.
