Alexandria proposes converting parking spaces to pocket park in Del Ray

Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) has proposed the conversion of parking spaces to a pocket park in the Del Ray neighborhood.

The proposed pocket park would be located on a current parking island at 3000 Fulton Street at the Clifford and Commonwealth Avenues intersection. The parking island provides space for about five to six standard passenger vehicles.

RPCA says the park would expand gathering spaces, improve walkability and pedestrian safety and improve neighborhood character. On the environmental side, RPCA says replacing pavement with trees and vegetation improves stormwater absorption and reduces runoff and urban heat.

The next closest park is the Del Ray Gateway Park about 0.1 miles away at the Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues intersection. There are numerous other parks within a half-mile, such as Mount Jefferson Park and Greenway, Goat Hill Park, Timberland Park, Lynhaven Gateway Park and Shirley Tyler Unity Park.

RPCA will host in-person community meetings on the proposal at 3000 Fulton Street from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, June 11 and 6-7 p.m. Thursday, July 16.
