Free Halloween Lyft rides offered in Alexandria to prevent drunk driving

Alexandria residents will have access to free rides during Halloween weekend as part of a regional effort to combat drunk driving during a holiday when more than one-third of U.S. traffic deaths involve impaired drivers.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program announced Monday that its 2025 Halloween SoberRide program will operate from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. on both Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, throughout the Washington metropolitan area, including Alexandria.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39% of U.S. traffic deaths in 2022 on Halloween involved drunk drivers.

Alexandria residents age 21 and older can download the Lyft app and enter a SoberRide code in the app’s payment tab under the “Add Lyft Pass” option to receive free transportation home, up to $15 per ride. The promo code will be posted at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 at SoberRide.com. One offer per user is available while supplies last.

“Well over a third of U.S. traffic fatalities during Halloween involve drunk drivers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president. “Halloween is of particular concern for younger drivers as NHTSA data shows that, in 2022, 54% of drunk driving crashes on U.S. roadways during the Halloween that year involved drivers ages 21 to 34.”

More than 735 people in the Washington metropolitan area used WRAP’s Halloween SoberRide program last October.

Since 1991, WRAP’s SoberRide program has provided 95,437 free safe rides home to would-be drunk drivers in the greater Washington area. The nonprofit also offers the program on Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day and during the winter holidays through New Year’s.
