City Manager James F. Parajon announced Wednesday the appointment of Paul Stoddard as the new director of the Department of Planning and Zoning.
Stoddard brings experience as a city planner and will officially assume the role Monday.
“Planning and Zoning plays a vital role in shaping Alexandria’s future while preserving the qualities that make our city unique,” Parajon said in a press release. “Paul brings both deep experience and a collaborative approach to this important role.”
Before joining Alexandria, Stoddard served seven years as planning director for the City of Falls Church, Virginia. In that role, he led efforts to update the city’s long-range vision, develop strategic plans and oversee development proposal reviews.
Stoddard earned his master’s degree in city planning from Virginia Tech. His focus areas include economic and community development, civic engagement and organizational health.
He views planning as a collaborative process that combines professional expertise with residents’ experiences, according to the city.
The appointment comes as Alexandria continues to balance growth and development with preserving its historic character and neighborhoods.
