Volunteer Alexandria has released its latest roundup of community service opportunities, featuring everything from reading tutoring for elementary students to emergency preparedness training.
The nonprofit organization, which serves as Alexandria’s volunteer matching service, connects residents with meaningful ways to contribute to their community through its regular “hotlist” of opportunities.
New this week
Two information sessions highlight this week’s new offerings. Wright to Read will host a virtual information night on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. for prospective reading tutors. The program pairs volunteers with elementary school students to support their literacy development.
Volunteer Alexandria will also hold an emergency preparedness information session on Sept. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. The virtual session covers training requirements for volunteers interested in disaster recovery and emergency response work.
For those seeking ongoing volunteer commitments, the organization continues recruiting for its Friendly Caller program, which matches volunteers with socially isolated seniors for regular phone check-ins. The program offers flexible scheduling.
Weekend events
Several hands-on volunteer opportunities are scheduled for this weekend and beyond:
- Founders Park cleanup: Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m.
- Jazz festival support: Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Market at Southern Towers
- Fall Crafts Festival: Sept. 13
- National Recovery Month event: Sept. 17 from 2:30 to 6 p.m.
Leadership opportunities
Volunteer Alexandria is also promoting board service opportunities, including positions with Alexandria Beyond the Classroom, which seeks volunteers with communications, marketing, fundraising, and legal expertise.
The organization will host its Board Impact Program on Nov. 6, offering training on nonprofit board service followed by a “speed matching” session. Interested participants can register online.
