A 76-year-old Alexandria woman who went missing Saturday afternoon has been found safe, police said.

Bernise Simpkin was located at 11:18 p.m. Saturday, according to the Alexandria Police Department. She had been missing for nearly nine hours after last being seen around 2:45 p.m. in the North Old Town area.

Police had issued a critical missing person alert earlier Saturday evening, asking residents to be on the lookout for Simpkin. She was described as 4 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 130 pounds, and was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, gray long-sleeve shirt, dark gray tights, and black Crocs.

The department announced her safe recovery in a social media update Saturday night, but did not provide details about where or how she was found.
