Adoptable Dog of the Week: Abi is ready to be your new best friend

Meet Abi, a sweet 4-year-old boy who loves to explore a grassy yard and hang out with his humans. This 59-pound love bug is the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s (AWLA) featured adoptable dog this week, and he’s receiving rave reviews from his current foster family.

At four years old, Abi is out of his puppy stage but still has lots of energy to play and join you on all your adventures. He loves a good run in the yard and playing fetch with his people, although he is still working on returning items during fetch. He’s eager to please and learn new things, making him an ideal companion for an active family.

A Perfect Foster Success Story

Abi’s foster family has nothing but amazing things to say about this gentle boy who has quickly adjusted to his foster environment. He’s been exploring the neighborhood, enjoying short walks, car rides, and plenty of nap time and snuggles. During his naps, he snores adorably—a charming quirk that has won over his foster family.

“He’s equal parts play and relax,” the AWLA reports. When he’s not playing fetch or running in the yard, you’ll find him peacefully gazing out the front window, curious about the world around him. He absolutely loves car rides and has settled into a nice routine with his foster family.

A Calm and Gentle Companion

What makes Abi particularly special is his calm, relaxed demeanor. He’s not food motivated or food aggressive, even around other dogs, and hasn’t barked once during his time in foster care. This generally very relaxed adult dog has not been protective of his food around other dogs in his foster home.

Abi has proven himself to be wonderfully independent, doing great being alone for up to five hours. He also calmly hangs out while his foster works from home, showing his adaptability to different household routines.

Building Confidence

While Abi is a happy, calm, loving companion, he can be a little shy at times and is working on building confidence on leashed walks. His ideal forever family would continue to support Abi in building trust in the world in exchange for all the love and happiness that he freely gives.

This sweet boy is making steady progress and would make a great new best friend for anyone willing to support his confidence-building journey.

Ready for Adoption

Thanks to a generous donor, Abi’s adoption fees have been paid through AWLA’s Adopt It Forward program. He is available for adoption from his foster home.
