Park and Recreation Commission to consider Skateboard Park design changes at Thursday hearing

The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 17, to discuss proposed changes to the Schuyler Hamilton Jones Skateboard Park (3540 Wheeler Avenue) as part of an amendment to the neighborhood park improvement plan.

The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street). The commission will review design recommendations and consider amendments to the 2015 Neighborhood Park Improvement Plan, specifically recommendation number 5 related to both Luckett Ballfield and the Schuyler Hamilton Jones Skateboard Park.

The city’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities is looking for affordable options to upgrade the 20-year-old skatepark. Renovation plans have yet to be publicly presented, and the city has been soliciting feedback since last fall.

“Since there is no funding currently allocated for the renovation of the park, RPCA is exploring options for quick, low, or no-cost interim improvements,” the city said on the project website. “These enhancements might include suggestions such as removing or rearranging certain skatepark equipment to improve the layout and flow of the park.”

city survey conducted last fall got 56 responses, and recommendations included improving lighting and adding shade structures, seating, and a water fountain.

Residents unable to attend the Thursday hearing can submit written comments by email to [email protected] or by mail to the City of Alexandria, Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities at 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. All comments must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16.

Following the public hearing, the commission will take action on the proposed design recommendations before proceeding to its regular monthly meeting.
