Alexandria SOHO Program seeks mentors for 2025-26 school year

Alexandria’s award-winning Space of Her Own (SOHO) program is looking for mentors who will spend a school year helping fifth-grade girls build confidence through art and STEM projects—culminating in transforming each child’s bedroom into a personalized space of her own.

The unique mentoring program pairs women one-to-one with local fifth-graders for weekly sessions from September through early June. Mentors and their mentees collaborate on professionally-led creative projects, then work together with the girl’s family to redesign her sleeping space using what they’ve created.

How to Apply

Prospective mentors must attend one of six information sessions at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center (1108 Jefferson St.). All sessions run 5:30-6:30 p.m.:

  • July 22-23 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • July 29-30 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • August 5-6 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

The program seeks creative, culturally diverse women who can commit to weekly meetings from 5:30-8 p.m. on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays throughout the school year. Mentors need access to a personal vehicle.
