Eugene Simpson Stadium Park (426 E. Monroe Ave.) is gearing up for a significant transformation, with major renovations slated to begin in July 2025, the City of Alexandria announced today (May 20).
The project, which aims to implement long-awaited improvements in functionality and accessibility, will necessitate a park closure starting June 30, 2025, with a phased reopening anticipated by August 2026.
The City of Alexandria and its Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) are advancing park enhancements that reflect extensive community input and the 2014 Eugene Simpson Stadium Park Improvement Plan recommendations.
- Planting a native tree buffer along the E. Duncan Alleyway
- Extending hardscape trails to the park’s northeast section
- Adding ADA-compliant access from E. Monroe to the dog park and rectangular fields
- Installing new bleachers at Big and Little Simpson
- Upgrading dugouts at both fields
- Adding new storage space at Big Simpson
- Building a dedicated concessions stand at Big Simpson
- Creating a passive use and picnic area adjacent to the concession stand
- Enhancing traffic flow and expanding the parking lot
- Installing synthetic turf at Big Simpson to improve drainage and playability
- Re-grading the natural turf field at Little Simpson to resolve drainage issues
The RPCA will share more details at a Public Construction Kickoff Meeting on Monday, June 2, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the YMCA (420 E Monroe Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301).
