In March, we published 220 stories, the most ever published in a single month on the website, and reached 430,316 visitors, a 38% increase in traffic year over year. Just seventeen days into April, and we’re averaging ten new stories per day.
We’re conducting in-depth investigations into city government and budgets, reporting regularly on Alexandria City Public Schools, and diligently covering beats such as criminal justice and local business. We attend nearly every notable local meeting and provide daily coverage of events happening across the city.
This level of hyperlocal coverage is rare for a community like Alexandria today, and it’s not easy to maintain. Unfortunately, the current economic uncertainty is contributing to a meaningful downturn in our primary source of revenue: advertising by local businesses and organizations.
In March, we launched the ALXnow Press Club. While we already have more than 88 members, we need more to weather a sustained economic downturn. If you’ve been on the fence about joining, now is the time to do so.
But it’s not just altruism — you’ll also get some great features that Press Club members love, including:
- Morning Briefing: A hand-curated newsletter with all the latest news and information you need. With this newsletter, you’ll never miss a thing! (Delivered Monday through Friday).
- News Alerts + Exclusive Content: A monthly roundup of restaurant deals around Alexandria. Be the first to learn about new restaurants, business openings, and more. (First edition coming soon).
- Monthly Meet-Up: A member-only virtual or in-person meetup to meet with the ALXnow team and fellow supporters of local independent journalism. (We’ll be announcing our first meetup very soon).

Of course, if you own a business, you can also support our efforts by advertising with us. Our advertising opportunities are effective and affordable!
