Alexandria kicking off leaf collection today

The leaves are falling around Alexandria, and starting today: the city is making the rounds to pick them up.

“The City of Alexandria will begin its annual leaf vacuuming and leaf bag collection program today, October 28,” the city said in a release. “Leaf collection is expected to continue through mid-January.”

Alexandria is divided into five zones for leaf collection with a rotating schedule of when each location gets leaves picked up. The city website said there will be three passes by leaf facuuming trucks during leaf season.

“Crews will post signs listing the earliest dates of the second and third passes in each zone, but inclement weather may cause schedule delays,” the city’s website said. “It will take crews several days to complete a single vacuuming pass in each zone, and it is not unusual to not see a truck on the first posted date for collection.”

There is an interactive website where residents can look up leaf collection dates for their home address.

The release said any resident who received City trash and recycling collection services may recycle leaves by:

  1. Raking leaves to the curb for vacuum collection.
  2. Placing leaves in paper leaf bags for collection (leaves in plastic bags are considered refuse, and are thrown away as trash).
  3. Composting leaves and yard waste at home.
