Neighborhood Spotlight is a recurring columnĀ covering both the City of Alexandria and Alexandria in Fairfax County. This monthly column is sponsored and written by theĀ Seward Group of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.
Colorful landscaping and soothing sounds of the cascading waterfall greet residents and visitors alike to the Island Creek neighborhood. Island Creek is a planned community comprised of single-family homes, town homes and condominiums in the Kingstowne area of Alexandria.
Construction for the Island Creek neighborhood started in 1994 and development continued until 2000. Today, residents of this community have exclusive access to numerous amenities, including two outdoor swimming pools, five children’s playgrounds and an extensive network of tree-lined biking and jogging trails throughout the community.
Residents also enjoy tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts as well as a scenic pond for catch and release fishing! A spacious clubhouse is rented out to residents for parties, special events, or meetings. The clubhouse is also the site of community fairs, yard sales, Trunk or Treat, game nights and other neighborhood events. A true highlight of the neighborhood is the Island Creek Elementary School, built in 2003.
The Island Creek Homeowners Association (HOA) website is an online resource for residents, who also receive a monthly email from the HOA with current updates and happenings in the community.
Another advantage of this coveted neighborhood is everything is available within a short distance. The Hilltop Village Center with Wegman’s, LA Fitness and other retailers is right across the street. Literally around the corner is Landsdowne Centre with CVS, and many dining options.
The Fairfax County library is less than a mile away. Kingstowne Towne Centre, and all the amazing shopping, dining, and entertainment options there, are a mile away. Less than 3 miles away is the Ft. Belvoir Military Base, the Franconia-Springfield Metro, Springfield Town Center, Amazon Fresh and many local retailers.
Island Creek residents are lucky to have farm fresh fruits and vegetables less than a mile away from the last farm in the Franconia area, Nalls Produce. Nalls has been in business since 1961 and has survived all the development around it. It is truly a treasure offering fresh produce, flowers, and shrubs; farm-to-table groceries; and seasonal needs such as pumpkins for Halloween and trees for Christmas. The annual Pumpkin Hill is now open!
As of this writing, there were only 2 properties for sale in Island Creek:
- A 5-bedroom single family colonial listed at $1,199,900
- A 3-bedroom condo for $415,000

If you had a chance to enhance a child’s future with a time commitment of less than 2 hours a week, how would you respond? You have that opportunity right now to join over 200 Alexandrians as a reading tutor volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC).
ATC tutors work with one child in kindergarten, first, or second grade in Alexandria public schools who need extra help with reading. Tutors meet with their Book Buddy 1-2 times each week for 30 minutes October-May at school, during school hours. Many struggling readers only receive one-on-one instruction through this program, and it makes all the difference. Last year, ATC served 195 children, of whom 82% ended the year reading on grade level and 96% made substantial reading gains. But the need is great, and we are still seeing learning lags from the pandemic.
This year, ATC plans to significantly increase the size of the program to reach over 250 students and to serve every elementary school in Alexandria. This is very exciting news, but we will only succeed if we can recruit more tutors. ATC trains you, matches you with a child, and provides ongoing lesson materials and support.
