Neighborhood Spotlight: The Rose Hill neighborhood — rich in history

Neighborhood Spotlight is a recurring column covering both the City of Alexandria and Alexandria in Fairfax County. This monthly column is sponsored and written by the Seward Group of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.

The Rose Hill neighborhood in Alexandria is rich in history, dating back to the 18th-century.

Rose Hill gets its name from an 18th century plantation that was once located nearby. Historical events that occurred here are described on a Civil War Trails marker on Rose Hill Drive. Additional information can be found on the Rose Hill Civic Association website.

In the spring of 1954, building began for this new community. The model homes were on Apple Tree Drive, just off Rose Hill Drive. There were no phones, no stores, no school, and Rose Hill Drive was just a dirt road. In 1955, phone service arrived with four-digit phone numbers!

Now, the Rose Hill neighborhood consists of single-family homes, condos and apartments. Rose Hill Elementary School, John Marshall Library, and the Rose Hill Plaza are all located in the neighborhood on Rose Hill Drive.

The anchor of Rose Hill Plaza is Safeway, and Walgreens, Dollar Tree, Tuesday Morning and Gabe’s are some of the many retail shopping options. Restaurants are also plentiful in this neighborhood spot including Mama Mia Pizza, Pho Kim Vietnamese Restaurant, Namaste Indian Cuisine, and many more. For a complete directory of the Rose Hill Plaza, visit Shop Rose Hill Plaza.

Rose Hill is bordered by Franconia Road to the north, Greendale Golf Course to the south, Rose Hill Drive and Rose Hill Plaza to the west and Telegraph Road to the east. For an easy commute, Metro’s Blue Line Stations at Van Dorn and Springfield-Franconia are near the neighborhood, and the Fairfax Connector Bus runs on Rose Hill Drive.

As of this writing, there are 3 single-family homes and 1 condo for sale in Rose Hill:

  • A 3-bedroom split foyer listed at $624,900
  • A 3-bedroom rambler listed at $634,999
  • A 2-bedroom rambler listed at $485,000
  • A 1-bedroom condo listed at $215,000

Recent home sales for May and June ranged from $547,500 to $680,000. As with every neighborhood in our area, prices can vary greatly due to location, size and property condition.

If you had a chance to enhance a child’s future with a time commitment of less than 2 hours a week, how would you respond? You have that opportunity right now to join over 200 Alexandrians as a reading tutor volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC).

ATC tutors work with one child in kindergarten, first, or second grade in Alexandria public schools who need extra help with reading. Tutors meet with their Book Buddy 1-2 times each week for 30 minutes October-May at school, during school hours. Many struggling readers only receive one-on-one instruction through this program, and it makes all the difference. Last year, ATC served 195 children, of whom 82% ended the year reading on grade level and 96% made substantial reading gains. But the need is great, and we are still seeing learning lags from the pandemic.

This year, ATC plans to significantly increase the size of the program to reach over 250 students and to serve every elementary school in Alexandria. This is very exciting news, but we will only succeed if we can recruit more tutors. ATC trains you, matches you with a child, and provides ongoing lesson materials and support.
