Vernon Ave. We’re delighted to announce that our featured poet is former Alexandria Poet Laureate Amy Young. Following her performance, we’ll open the mic to all readers. About Amy Young
Amy Young served as Poet Laureate of Alexandria from 2010-2013. Born in Providence, RI, and raised in Washington, DC, Amy has read, studied and written poetry since she was a child. She currently teaches writing at the Lab School of Washington, where she is a teaching artist in creative writing. Amy studied poetry in George Mason University’s Master of Fine Arts program, and graduated with an MFA from The Rainier Writing Workshop. Amy’s poems have been set to music and performed by the 21st Century Consort at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. In 2020, she won the Bechtel Prize from Teachers & Writers Magazine for an innovative writing project with her students that combined myth-making and art. Her poems have appeared in anthologies and have been published in several journals including Poet Lore and Broadsided. She is writing her way through the dictionary and is currently on letter “L.” She is associated with the Surrey Street poets.
