A dessert shop serving churros seeks to open in vacant Old Town storefront

A new dessert shop that serves churros has filed paperwork to open in a vacant storefront on King Street in Old Town.

Churrok’s is asking the city to make small modifications to 1022 King Street, the former home of the now-closed Alexandria Cupcake storefront. The application goes before the Board of Architectural Review on Dec. 17.

Churrok’s is asking for permission to make three ventilation openings in the rear of the building, in between Thompson Italian and Om Tibet.

This is the first Churrok’s in the D.C. area, and the business is owned by Veronica Castaneda Banuelos, according to the Churrok’s Instagram page. The business’ Facebook page says that it is “opening soon.”

Banuelos told ALXnow that it is waiting on final approvals from the city.

“We are going to sell some culinary churros as well, not just the regular sweet churros, coffee, hot chocolate and our specialty coffee pot/latte,” Banuelos said via text.
