Four-day “Banned Book Speakeasy” at Morrison House will celebrate forbidden literature

The Study at Morrison House (116 South Alfred Street) is gearing up for a unique “Banned Book Speakeasy” event from April 23 to 26, 2025. They’re mixing things up by offering cocktails inspired by controversial books, with a dollar from each drink going to the Virginia Library Association.

The hotel’s website teases, “We want to let you in on our little secret… The Study at Morrison House is filling its shelves —and cocktail menu—with banned books. As a haven for storytelling, we’re celebrating the power of literature in all its forms while supporting local libraries”.

They’re positioning themselves as a storytelling hub, celebrating literature in all its forms while backing local libraries.

We’ve curated a unique selection of drinks inspired by some of the most beloved—and banned—books in the U.S. But you’ll have to stop by to discover which ones made the list.

Following the speakeasy, on April 27, the hotel is hosting the “Old Town Book Fair: Adult Edition.” This event will feature over 15 vendors selling book-related items. The Study plans to sell books from its Banned Book collection, with half of the sales going to the Virginia Library Association.

Among the vendors, you’ll find Xolo Books, which specializes in works by BIPOC authors and voices.
